Adhesion tests of coatings are of major significance in determining if the coating is fit for purpose.

There are several types of adhesion test. Most provide a measurement of the coating adhesion rather than a test of adhesion against a predetermined limit.

The Elcometer 109 provides the operator with a means of carrying out an unambiguous pass/fail test of the adhesion of the coating against a specification limit.

Technique
The 109 has been developed for testing coatings using colour coded tensile dollies which break at a predetermined force of 5MPa (700psi) 7MPa (1000psi) or 9MPa (1300psi). Other values are available on request.

If the tensile dolly breaks then the coating adhesion is acceptable. A piece of the tensile dolly will remain adhered to the surface and the colour band indicates the force the coating adhesion has failed to meet the requirements of the specification.
