INSTRUMENT CHARACTERISTICS
In the hands of competent research technicians, Models 5130
and 5150 perform reproducible tests that are accurate to the variations of quality inherent in the testing material.

Both units are mounted inside a compact aluminum housing
finished in baked wrinkle enamel. The sturdy housing carries the control panel membrane with its various keys, digital
display for the LED readouts and key pad for operation.
Taber Abraser Model 5130
5130

The Model 5150 Abraser is a dual unit which can test two different or identical materials separately or simultaneously for comparison and contrast. Because at this capability, many of its quality features are doubled.

Both models are covered by a 12 month warranty on parts and workmanship.

Model 5130 Dimensions:   Unit - 11" x 16" x 10" high - Net Weight - 80 lbs
Model 5150 Dimensions:   Unit - 20" x 14" x 10" high - Net Weight - 115 lbs

ABRASERs are durable, precision-built instruments designed as accelerated wear testers that test the wear resistance of a variety of specimens including solid materials, painted, lacquered, electroplated surfaces, plastic-coated materials, textiles, metals, leather, rubber and linoleum. Some of the materials whose wear properties are measured with ABRASERs include the following:

LuggageUpholsteryDental products
ClothingCarpetingPaper and paperboard
Ceramic tileGlassPlastic coatings
Decorative laminatesCoated MetalsPaint, lacquer & varnish
Resilient flooring PlasticsTextiles
RugsTraffic paint Anodic coating
WaxesElectronics Decorative sheets
Labels

Materials to be tested are subjected to wear action of two abrasive wheels at a known pressure in grams. This wear action results when a pair of abrasive wheels is rotated in opposite directions by a turntable on which the specimen material is mounted. The abrading wheels travel on the material about a horizontal axis displaced tangentially from the axis of the test material which results in a sliding action.

An exclusive feature of the ABRASERs is a patented "X" pattern of abrasion, produced by the rotary rub-wear action of the wheels. The wear pattern formed is that of two intersecting areas or a slightly curved herringbone configuration from the outside to the center, and from the center to the outside of the specimen. An area of 30 square centimeters or over 4.5 square inches is subjected to test and a complete circle on the material surface is abraded at all angles of grain or weave.

ABRASION TESTING TEST CONTROLS

Rigid controls are exercised over the test by 1) electrically counting the revolutions of the turntable carrying the test specimen, 2) carefully selecting the abrasive quality of the abrading wheels, 3) recording the weight load in grams placed on the wheels and 4) removing abrased particles with a vacuum pickup.

QUIET CABINET

In some laboratory environments, the ABRASER and its associated vacuum system can create sound levels that are above normal. The new "Quiet Cabinet" will reduce sound levels and provide a convenient, dust-free work space.

TABER ABRADING WHEELS

Taber Abrading Wheels are available in five levels of abrasiveness to suit a wide range of material testing applications. Wool felt or plain rubber wheels test delicate materials or the abrasiveness of materials such as dental powders. Wheels that feature abrasive particles in a resilient matrix of rubber or a hard matrix of vitrified clay are suitable for stiffer materials.

SELECTING ABRADING WHEELS

The choice of abrading wheels for Models 5130 and 5150 should be based upon the wear the specimen material will be subjected to in actual use.

Abrading wheels for ABRASERs include five general types of varying abrasive quality:

The plain neoprene rubber wheel containing no abrasive grain is used for testing dental cleaning powders, dentifrice and for mounting sandpaper strips which are used as resilient wheels. These sandpaper strips must be changed after each 500 cycles of operation. The wool felt wheel is valuable in testing the wearing qualities of two fabrics in friction with one another.

NOTE: The CS-10F Resilient Calibrase Wheel is subject to deterioration especially in high ozone atmospheres. The CS-10F Calibrase Wheel should be used before the expiration date printed on the wheel.

Non-Resilient (Calibrade) Wheels are more easily subject to "clogging" and "crowning" and will require more frequent refacing with the Model 200 Wheel Refacer. Wheels may be refaced as often as required down to the minimum usable diameter of 1 -3/4" as indicated on the wheel label.

Under ordinary conditions, a load and wheel combination should run a minimum of 300 cycles on a material specimen before the end point occurs, otherwise the test is too harsh and does not correspond to normal wear.

TABER MULTIMEDIA ABRASER ATTACHMENT

5500 Multi-Media Attachment

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!

Measure the abrasiveness of fluids and powders.

The Multi-Media Abraser Attachment provides the first repeatable method for the evaluation of the abrasivity of fluids. The standard configuration consists of brass pins abrading on a steel wear disc mounted inside a rotating table with the medium as the abradent. The brass pins and steel disc can be tailored "in-house" to duplicate the materials in your specific application. Both R&D and quality control will benefit from the ability to re-create actual wear caused by fluids and powders on different substrates.
